Zebra Store Manager Tablet Redesign
Overview
This app is used by managers in retail, banking and healthcare to manage their employees. It is extensive as it is a paired down version of the desktop scheduling software.
Role
Lead designer responsible for visual design and UX design. Collaborated with developers.
Team
The team consisted of 1 designer, 1 front-end developer, and 2 engineers.
Duration
2021 - 2023
Challenge
The app was looking dated. It needed to be redesigned to be more contemporary and address accessibility standards. In addition, the landing page in the tablet was the store schedule screen. This was extremely data heavy and needed a better entrance point.
Approach
I added a home screen to the tablet version so store managers can see an overview of their store metrics, absences, and pending approvals. I created redundancy to accommodate different working styles. In addition to be able to modify off the main store schedule screen, each section has a full screen version that is accessible from the home screen widgets and the side navigation. This allows the user to focus on that particular task. I added the ability to bulk approve. I moved the edit/details sheet from the bottom to be a right panel to be consistent with other apps.
I also redesigned the app to be consistent with the changes I made in the ESS app. These included implementing a card system, modernizing the forms, navigation and simplifying the workflows, adding a chip system for quick filtering. I updated the icons to be consistent with the large design system. I updated the colors and error states for improved accessibility. I added empty states with illustrations and copy for suggested next steps. I expanded the glossary. I created a white and branded mode.

Testing
I set up prototypes. We met with Waitrose and Morrisons’ store managers to get their feedback on the new version. It was very insightful to hear their viewpoints. Based on their concerns, I made some modifications to the app, while noting those that can be configurable. I created documentation to use with other customer feedback sessions to note issues and see overlap in order to decide configurable options or product changes.

Results
I presented to stakeholders, project managers, and the larger UX group. It is currently in development. I have heard the tablet version will be used as a basis for an upcoming desktop scheduling redesign.
