Zebra Employee Self Service Redesign
Overview
This app is used by millions of frontline employees in retail, banking and healthcare to manage their work schedule and time off. It is extensive as it has to accommodate labor laws and different use cases depending on the customer and/or country.
Role
Lead designer responsible for visual design and UX design. Collaborated with research on user testing and developers on implementation.
Team
The team consisted of 1 designer, 1 researcher, 2 front-end developers, and 4 engineers.
Duration
2021 - 2023
Challenge
The app was looking dated. It needed to be redesigned to be more contemporary, address accessibility standards, and increase user engagement.
Approach
I redesigned the home screen to be more functional and give the user an overview without having to go into the app. I implemented a card system. I modernized the forms, navigation and simplified the workflows. I added redundancy so users can get to places within the app multiple ways. I added a chip system for quick filtering. I updated the icons to be consistent with the larger design system. I updated the colors and error states for improved accessibility. I added empty states with illustrations and copy for suggested next steps. I added an in-app help function for first time users and on-demand. I expanded the glossary. I created a white, branded, and dark mode.

Testing
I set up prototypes to do moderated and unmoderated user testing with research. Participants were store employees and some managers. We tested on ease of use for navigation, home screen, shift trade, schedule, PTO, and timecard. Feedback was overall positive and insightful. Based on an assumption participants were making, I created a user flow to make that assumption a reality.

Results
This was a large revamp that took three years alongside the Store Manager redesign. We made significant improvements. I worked closely with research, front-end development, and the engineering team. It launched in April 2025 as Zebra Workcloud Shift.
